Judge Leonie Brinkema sentenced 9/11 terrorist Zacarias Massaoui to life imprisonment.
He will be put in a "super-max" prison 100 miles south of Denver, in the middle of the desert. He will be kept in solitary confinement for 23 hours daily, locked up in a soundproofed concrete room 60ft underground, measuring 7 foot-by-12 foot.
Massaoui tried to interrupt the judge, saying he had won.
"Well, Mr. Moussaoui, if you look around this courtroom today, every person in this room when this proceeding is over will leave this courtroom, and they are free to go anyplace they want," she said. "They can go outside, they can feel the sun, they smell fresh air.
