They played like there was no tomorrow ...
Arsenal FC won 3 goals to Nil but lost out to AC Milan on 4-3 aggregate in their 2nd Leg UEFA Champions league knock out stage. All three goals were scored in the 1st half.
The Truth :
Even me as an ardent Arsenal fan never in my wildest dream expected them to score let alone win. AC Milan is not a flash-off-the-pan team from Italy. With star-studded players like Robinho, Bommel and Ibrahimovic you just don't beat them with 3 goals. But Arsenal of all teams this season, written off in the beginning, throphyless and hated mercilessly by dumb ManU fans, scored 3 and missed one by Robin Van Persie. They played like wounded Gods and glorified every fan in the Emirates and those watching on telly as well. That night it was not only Arsenal as a club. It was what the players felt they should do and to me this is what Arsenal and Arsene Wenger is all about. One could see every player giving every bit of his soul and strength into the game.
I don't think even AC Milan expected a scorcher like that.
If the fourth strike by Van Persie had gone in, the whole game may have gone into extra time and maybe Arsenal would have been victorious and move on to the quarter finals. If only Robin had struck the late Gervinho's strike at goal. If only ....
Let me also say, this was one of Arsenal's greatest game ever and every fan in the Emirates looked astounded that a team like Arsenal with "kids" score 3 goals and hold the forte against AC Milan but only to loose out gracefully. Arsenal would have created football history had they beaten Milan and moved on.
Arsene Wenger did say, it is not impossible. How true. Sad, they played astoundingly magnific' but had to bow out. Heroes they are without a doubt.
I have seen many late comebacks from underdog teams, but at the Emirates, Wednesday night, it was a team more lesser than an underdog slaying the giants of Italy in a game of football I have not seen ever. Played they did with passion and pride. That's Arsenal for YOU.
Damn I'm proud to be an Arsenal fan.
